Long-Haul Sweatshops

March 10, 2016

Congratulations to Anne Balay for her informative op-ed in Wednesday’s New York Times, Long Haul Sweatshops, on the problems facing long-haul truckers.  Professor Balay is this year’s LGBT Studies Research Fellow and has been visiting New Haven periodically to conduct research in Yale’s collections for her on-going project on queer labor history, truckers, and sexuality.  She will be here next month to speak at the symposium on Queer Labor organized by the Yale Research Initiative on the History of Sexualities, Thursday, April 14, 5-6:30 pm, in HGS 211.

IT might seem like a good time to be a long-haul trucker: More than ever, the American economy relies on hundreds of thousands of 18-wheelers to move goods across the country. But the industry is in crisis, with drivers leaving in droves because of low pay and poor working conditions.
