WGSS Welcomes New Assistant Pofessor, Joseph Fischel

July 6, 2012

July 1st marked the first official day of the newest member of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies faculty.  Joseph Fischel, Assistant Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, received his PhD from the Political Science Department at the University of Chicago in 2011. He arrives at Yale after spending the 2011-2012 academic year as a postdoctoral fellow at the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women at Brown University.  His research interests include normative political theory, feminist and queer studies, public law, and the legal regulation of sex/gender/sexuality. He is currently working on two book projects and has published multiple articles.  Professor Fischel will be teaching two courses in the fall semester.  Introduction to LGBT Studies (WGSS 296) will meet on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and will also feature Thursday evening film screenings and guest lectures. Theory and Politics of Sexual Consent (WGSS 372) will meet on Wednesday afternoons and will explore such topics as sex work, normative sex, and sex across age differences.  When not teaching, writing, or researching, he is a committed fan of yoga, beaches, and mediocre legal television series.
