Event description:
In this talk, Dr Bassi will look at Italian experimental queer writing to offer a new perspective on the Italian mass social movements that began with the student protests of 1968 and the factory strikes of 1969, and continued to shake the foundations of the Italian Republic throughout the 1970s. By tracing the translation into Italian literature of some of the key ideas of the North American Gay Liberation Movement, the talk will explore how the discourse of sexual liberation intersected with Marxian analyses of post-Fordist capitalism to generate a new poetics of desire in Italian context. Serena Bassi is a post-doctoral research associate at the Yale Translation Initiative and lecturer in Italian Language and Literature. Her research focuses on Translation Studies, modern Italian literature, the history of sexuality and Queer Studies.
